Grossly oversimplifying, an offense is as good as its best players, and a defense is as good as its worst players. This is because, in general, the offense chooses where to attack the defense. So the usefulness of a "shutdown" corner is limited, because, unless the rest of the DB's are also good, the other team just ignores that guy. Of course, it's not quite this simple, since the defense is capable of scheming to take away a certain number of things.
The more good players you have on defense, the more you can take away. So basically, having a really really good corner is always a good thing, but how good a thing is directly dependent on the talent around him. The better a player is relative to his teammates, the more diminishing the return of having him on the field.
Good points. The rule of thumb I've heard is that when choosing between two equally talented defenders, choose the one who plays closest to the center of the line of scrimmage which often equates to "choose the bigger one". The logic being that it's more difficult for an offense to scheme away from a great defensive lineman than a great defensive back. Bill Barnwell. Extra Points. It notes: Through five games, the cornerback has had five passes thrown in his coverage area.

Based on Asomugha's previous comments, winning a championship is the single most important factor in choosing a new team.
Asomugha will weigh the pros and cons of each team and make his decision. Pros: Rex Ryan would salivate over the thought of having two corners like Darrelle Revis and Nnamdi Asomugha on opposite sides of the field.
On a team that has several defensive playmakers, Asomugha would fit right in. Cons: The Jets still have a young quarterback that shows promise but is not considered a top-level quarterback. For this reason, the offense is not as consistent as other teams, and Scrabble knows by now that it takes a quarterback to win games. Their offense is young and talented but still not considered elite. Cons: The feared Ravens defense is aging and has only a few prime years left. Unless your name is Darrell Green, CBs, in general, do not age well into their 30s.
Just the possibility of lining up Mario, Smith, Okoye, and Ngata makes me drool, especially with Cushing and Barwin as well. By bigfatdrunk on The 2 positions are by no means mutually exclusive. By Shake on The idea that a better pass rush will have a direct impact on the secondary is not necessarily true. See this Lions blog that did some analysis last year three parts in all. By Pure Chapman on The numbers show that pass rush does not automatically correlate to a better pass defense.
The Texans are an excellent example of that. Or you cause a bad pass but stone hands drops it. By papabear on By Cut Block on CB is a position where losing even a few steps can take you from incredible to average or bad. Ngata just does everything and having a player like that to build a around would just be amazing.
