However, because it is still an active-duty United States Navy ship, visitors must pass through security before boarding.

Jackets, belts, and other bulky clothing items must be removed, and visitors must pass through a metal detector. Bags are manually inspected. You can bring purses and backpacks, even suitcases, but once they have been inspected you must keep them with you at all times. No strollers are allowed on the ship. Furthermore, the ship is not handicap accessible, and those in wheelchairs or who require walkers will not be allowed to board.

You must be able to walk on your own. Everyone 18 and older must have a government issued photo identification. Those under 18 are exempt from the ID rule, but must board with parents or a person 18 or older. Passing through security really slows the boarding process. You could be waiting for an hour or more on a busy day during the summer. I was there during the week and on a weekend, and the line seemed to be the same.

Thus, if you want to see the ship, just bite the bullet and get in line. The only thing I can recommend is to arrive when the ship opens. You can never go wrong arriving first thing in the morning whenever standing in a line is involved. The operating schedule for the USS Constitution varies based on the season. Visitors to the USS Constitution are welcome to tour the ship on their own.

Examples include: driver's license, passport, etc. Additionally, all bags will be screened at the security entrance. Visitors under the age of 18 wishing to embark do not require an approved ID; however, all visitors, except infants, will receive a hand stamp from the security guards, so Sailors can verify they have been cleared to embark the ship.

Visitors will be asked to remove any bulky articles of clothing such as jackets, all jewelry, watches, belts, electronic devices including personal music players, PDA's, smartphones and cell phones, camera equipment, and all bags, luggage, or backpacks so that the items may be examined.

Please note any contraband will be confiscated and National Park Service Rangers will be notified. Blades of less than two inches may be declared to security and will be returned if deemed safe. Once visitors have completed a security screening, they may bring personal shopping bags, backpacks, suitcases, etc.

Violators of these rules will be asked to depart Charlestown Navy Yard. Full access to the ship is limited to visitors who can safely walk aboard the ship unassisted. Wheelchair access is limited to the top deck and subject to tide conditions, which may make the brow access ramp too steep to safely board the ship. Strollers are never allowed on board.

Visitors with service animals are authorized access to the navy yard and the top spar deck of the ship. Under the ADA, a service animal is defined as a dog that has been individually trained to work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability.

If at any time a service animal does not appear to be under a visitor's full control, that visitor will be asked to depart the navy yard. Non-service animals and pets are not allowed on board the ship.
