Can i reuse axle nut
So the axle nut is the thing that holds the hub to the axle. The spindle nut connects your halfshaft to your wheel hub, and often looks like a rusty, crusty mess sitting at the center of your brake rotor. Most of the time your get one with the hub unit. The spindle nut performs the critical function of retaining the hub assembly on the spindle.
A novel spindle nut assembly is presented comprising three components: a locking washer, a locking snap ring, and a nut. Adjusting non-driven bearings. The bearing is adjusted by tightening the hub nut if it is too loose, or loosening the nut if it is too tight. It should be done with the wheel on and raised on an axle stand.
Rock the wheel from side-to-side and top-to-bottom to check for bearing wear. To pre-load the bearings, install the spindle washer and spindle nut onto the spindle with the hub and bearings in place. Once greased up and put back into place, wheel bearings need to be tightened in a very specific way. If this is not done properly, they can become too tight and that will cause excessive wear to the bearing itself, ultimately causing it to fail.
You can also tell that the sound is related to wheel bearings if it changes in proportion to vehicle speed. I have also removed it several times for front end work with no problems , just make sure it is properly torqued. Thanks guys. Appreciate it. Sooch said:. Why can't I just use a drop of red locktite when I tighten?. Variant TDI said:. Please don't Drivbiwire Zehntes Jahr der Veteran.
Without red Loctite you need a 6 foot breaker bar, with red Locktite, about the length of the car. Especially in the salt I am in the same situation and am wondering about the Bentley instructions. Why the ? To make sure things are seated properly before applying final torque? Anyone want to shed some light here??? Metal Man Vendor. For the 24 years I've been working on VW's the torque has always been as tight as my impact gun will make them.
Everyone else I have ever talked to and many are or were professional mechanics just tighten it to or ft-lb, and that's it, it never needs servicing until the customer whacks a curb.
